Ask Your Real Estate Agent

If you’re already working with a real estate agent, ask him or her to refer you to a reputable New York County mortgage lender. An experienced realtor will be well-versed in the financing process and should be able to direct you to reputable mortgage companies; moreover, your agent should be able to tell you which mortgage lenders you should steer clear of.

Ask Your Network

If you aren’t working with an agent yet and you want to get preapproved for a loan before you reach out to one, ask your social network if they can recommend mortgage companies. If you know friends, family members, or even co-workers who have recently purchased or refinanced a house in Lower Manhattan, NY, ask them if they would recommend the mortgage lender they worked with. You can count on your network to offer honest insight. For example, if your buddy wasn’t happy with his experience with a mortgage company, it’s a safe bet that he’ll let you know; likewise, if your sibling, cousin, or any other family member had a great experienced with the mortgage companies they worked with, it’s likely that they’ll provide you with the details.

Read Online Reviews

You can also check online reviews to find the best mortgage companies near you. Check the websites of Manhattan, NY mortgage companies for testimonials. You can also use resources like Angie’s List, Home Advisor, and Zillow to find reviews of different mortgage lenders in the area. You can find overviews of mortgage companies that service your local area on these sites, including their background and credentials, as well as reviews from real clients that have first-hand experience working with Lower Manhattan NY mortgage companies.

Consider Experience

It’s true that a new mortgage lender may have a lot of knowledge in financing; however, there is something to be said for experience. Reviewing documents, assessing interest rates, speaking with banks, and everything else that goes into securing a home mortgage can take a lot of time and requires a good bit of knowledge and first-hand experience. Chances are you’re going to have better results when you work with a mortgage lender that is well-established in the Lower Manhattan, NY community and has a proven track record of success. When you’re researching mortgage companies near me, be sure to check out how long each lender has been in business and inquire about the type of experience they have had.

Look at Proximity

While a mortgage lender’s location won’t impact his or her experience, it may affect your overall experience. When applying for financing, meeting deadlines is extremely important. When you have questions or you need assistance (which you probably will at some point), you’ll want to know that you will be able to get in touch with your mortgage lender. For these reasons, you might want to take a mortgage company’s location into consideration. It’s much more likely that you’ll have a better outcome when your lender is situated in your time zone or even better, in the same zip code.

Consider Loan Options

Lastly, when you’re looking for a mortgage lender who will best suit your needs, it’s important to find someone who offers and has experience in the specific type of home loan you are interested in. There are several different types of mortgages available; conventional, FHA, USDA, VA, and FHA 203k Rehabilitation are just some of the different options. For example, if you’re a veteran, you may be interested in finding out if you qualify for a VA home loan, so you’ll want to choose a mortgage company that has experience with this specialized type of financing.

Schedule Consultations

Before you choose a New York County mortgage lender, it’s a good idea to schedule consultations with a handful of different companies. Pick at least three lenders that appear to offer the qualifications that will meet your needs and schedule an appointment to meet with a broker from each mortgage company. Find out what type of documentation you should bring with you during your appointment with each broker so they can run numbers and offer you an overview of the rates that you may qualify for. Additionally, you should ask some key questions that are pertinent to securing a loan. After you’ve finished the consultation process, compare the rates each mortgage company offered, as well as the overall impression each lender made.

Some information about Lower Manhattan, NY

Lower Manhattan, also known as Downtown Manhattan or Downtown New York, is the southernmost part of Manhattan, the central borough for business, culture, and government in New York City. Lower Manhattan is defined most commonly as the area delineated on the north by 14th Street, on the west by the Hudson River, on the east by the East River, and on the south by New York Harbor. The Lower Manhattan business district, known as the Financial District, forms the main core of the area below Chambers Street.

The area that would eventually encompass modern-day New York City was inhabited by the Lenape people. These groups of culturally and linguistically identical Native Americans traditionally spoke an Algonquian language now referred to as Unami.

European settlement began with the founding of a Dutch fur trading post in Lower Manhattan, later called New Amsterdam (Dutch: Nieuw-Amsterdam) in 1626. The first fort was built at The Battery to protect New Netherland.

Soon thereafter, most likely in 1626, construction of Fort Amsterdam began. Later, the Dutch West Indies Company imported African slaves to serve as laborers; they helped to build the wall that defended the town against English and native attacks. Early directors included Willem Verhulst and Peter Minuit. Willem Kieft became a director in 1638 but five years later was embroiled in Kieft’s War against the Native Americans. The Pavonia Massacre, across the Hudson River in present-day Jersey City resulted in the death of 80 natives in February 1643. Following the massacre, Algonquian tribes joined forces and nearly defeated the Dutch. The Dutch Republic sent additional forces to the aid of Kieft, leading to the overwhelming defeat of the Native Americans and a peace treaty on August 29, 1645.
