mortgage lenders near Meatpacking District, NY

Finding a mortgage company in Meatpacking District, NY isn’t all that hard; a quick search for “mortgage companies near me”, “best mortgage company near me”, or even “best online mortgage lenders” will certainly reveal plenty of options to choose from. While it’s true that there’s no shortage of mortgage companies that service the New York County area, choosing the best mortgage lender to meet your needs can seem like a daunting task.

How do you narrow down the options and find the right lender for you? To help you choose the right mortgage company that will meet your specific needs, here’s a look at some handy tips to consider.

Ask Your Real Estate Agent

If you’re already working with a real estate agent, ask him or her to refer you to a reputable New York County mortgage lender. An experienced realtor will be well-versed in the financing process and should be able to direct you to reputable mortgage companies; moreover, your agent should be able to tell you which mortgage lenders you should steer clear of.

Ask Your Network

If you aren’t working with an agent yet and you want to get preapproved for a loan before you reach out to one, ask your social network if they can recommend mortgage companies. If you know friends, family members, or even co-workers who have recently purchased or refinanced a house in Meatpacking District, NY, ask them if they would recommend the mortgage lender they worked with. You can count on your network to offer honest insight. For example, if your buddy wasn’t happy with his experience with a mortgage company, it’s a safe bet that he’ll let you know; likewise, if your sibling, cousin, or any other family member had a great experienced with the mortgage companies they worked with, it’s likely that they’ll provide you with the details.

Read Online Reviews

You can also check online reviews to find the best mortgage companies near you. Check the websites of Manhattan, NY mortgage companies for testimonials. You can also use resources like Angie’s List, Home Advisor, and Zillow to find reviews of different mortgage lenders in the area. You can find overviews of mortgage companies that service your local area on these sites, including their background and credentials, as well as reviews from real clients that have first-hand experience working with Meatpacking District NY mortgage companies.

Consider Experience

It’s true that a new mortgage lender may have a lot of knowledge in financing; however, there is something to be said for experience. Reviewing documents, assessing interest rates, speaking with banks, and everything else that goes into securing a home mortgage can take a lot of time and requires a good bit of knowledge and first-hand experience. Chances are you’re going to have better results when you work with a mortgage lender that is well-established in the Meatpacking District, NY community and has a proven track record of success. When you’re researching mortgage companies near me, be sure to check out how long each lender has been in business and inquire about the type of experience they have had.

Look at Proximity

While a mortgage lender’s location won’t impact his or her experience, it may affect your overall experience. When applying for financing, meeting deadlines is extremely important. When you have questions or you need assistance (which you probably will at some point), you’ll want to know that you will be able to get in touch with your mortgage lender. For these reasons, you might want to take a mortgage company’s location into consideration. It’s much more likely that you’ll have a better outcome when your lender is situated in your time zone or even better, in the same zip code.

Consider Loan Options

Lastly, when you’re looking for a mortgage lender who will best suit your needs, it’s important to find someone who offers and has experience in the specific type of home loan you are interested in. There are several different types of mortgages available; conventional, FHA, SONYMA, USDA, VA, and FHA 203k Rehabilitation are just some of the different options. For example, if you’re a veteran, you may be interested in finding out if you qualify for a VA home loan, so you’ll want to choose a mortgage company that has experience with this specialized type of financing.

Schedule Consultations

Before you choose a New York County mortgage lender, it’s a good idea to schedule consultations with a handful of different companies. Pick at least three lenders that appear to offer the qualifications that will meet your needs and schedule an appointment to meet with a broker from each mortgage company. Find out what type of documentation you should bring with you during your appointment with each broker so they can run numbers and offer you an overview of the rates that you may qualify for. Additionally, you should ask some key questions that are pertinent to securing a loan. After you’ve finished the consultation process, compare the rates each mortgage company offered, as well as the overall impression each lender made.

Some information about Meatpacking District, NY

The Meatpacking District is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan that runs from West 14th Street south to Gansevoort Street, and from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street. The Meatpacking Business Improvement District extends these borders farther north to West 17th Street, east to Eighth Avenue, and south to Horatio Street.

A Native American trading station called ‘Sapohanikan’ was on the riverbank, which, accounting for landfill, was located about where Gansevoort Street meets Washington Street today. The footpath that led from Sapohanikan inland to the east became the foundation for Gansevoort Street, which by accident or design aligns, within one degree, to the spring and autumnal equinoxes. In recognition of this history, petitions were made to call the 14th Street Park ‘Saphohanikan Park’, although it appears no formal recognition was given.

The earliest development of the area now known as the Meatpacking District came in the mid-19th century. Before that it was the location of Fort Gansevoort and of the upper extension of Greenwich Village, which had been a vacation spot until overtaken by the northward movement of New York City. The irregular street patterns in the area resulted from the clash of the Greenwich Village street system with that of the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, which sought to impose a regular grid on the undeveloped part of Manhattan island.

Construction of residences in the neighborhood – primarily rowhouses and town houses, some of which were later converted into tenements – began around 1840, primarily in the Greek Revival style which was prominent at the time. By mid-century, with Fort Gansevoort replaced by freight yards of the Hudson River Railroad, a neighborhood developed which was part heavy industry and part residential – a pattern which was more typical of an earlier period in the city’s history but which was becoming less usual, as industry and residences began to be isolated in their own districts. In the western portion of the neighborhood, heavy industry such as iron works and a terra cotta manufacturer could be found, while lighter industry such as carpentry and woodworking, lumber yards, paint works, granite works and a plaster mill blended into the residential area. At the time of the Civil War the part of the district west of Ninth Avenue and Greenwich Street and above 10th Street was the location of numerous distilleries making turpentine and camphene, a lamp fuel.
