How to Choose the Best Mortgage Lender in Brooklyn, NY
Finding a mortgage company in Sheepshead Bay, NY isn’t all that hard; a quick search for “mortgage companies near me”, “best mortgage company near me”, or even “best online mortgage lenders” will certainly reveal plenty of options to choose from. While it’s true that there’s no shortage of mortgage companies that service the Kings County area, choosing the best mortgage lender to meet your needs can seem like a daunting task.
How do you narrow down the options and find the right lender for you? To help you choose the right mortgage company that will meet your specific needs, here’s a look at some handy tips to consider.
Ask Your Real Estate Agent
If you’re already working with a real estate agent, ask him or her to refer you to a reputable Kings County mortgage lender. An experienced realtor will be well-versed in the financing process and should be able to direct you to reputable mortgage companies; moreover, your agent should be able to tell you which mortgage lenders you should steer clear of.
Ask Your Network
If you aren’t working with an agent yet and you want to get preapproved for a loan before you reach out to one, ask your social network if they can recommend mortgage companies. If you know friends, family members, or even co-workers who have recently purchased or refinanced a house in Sheepshead Bay, NY, ask them if they would recommend the mortgage lender they worked with. You can count on your network to offer honest insight. For example, if your buddy wasn’t happy with his experience with a mortgage company, it’s a safe bet that he’ll let you know; likewise, if your sibling, cousin, or any other family member had a great experienced with the mortgage companies they worked with, it’s likely that they’ll provide you with the details.
Read Online Reviews
You can also check online reviews to find the best mortgage companies near you. Check the websites of Brooklyn, NY mortgage companies for testimonials. You can also use resources like Angie’s List, Home Advisor, and Zillow to find reviews of different mortgage lenders in the area. You can find overviews of mortgage companies that service your local area on these sites, including their background and credentials, as well as reviews from real clients that have first-hand experience working with Sheepshead Bay NY mortgage companies.
It’s true that a new mortgage lender may have a lot of knowledge in financing; however, there is something to be said for experience. Reviewing documents, assessing interest rates, speaking with banks, and everything else that goes into securing a home mortgage can take a lot of time and requires a good bit of knowledge and first-hand experience. Chances are you’re going to have better results when you work with a mortgage lender that is well-established in the Sheepshead Bay, NY community and has a proven track record of success. When you’re researching mortgage companies near me, be sure to check out how long each lender has been in business and inquire about the type of experience they have had.
Look at Proximity
While a mortgage lender’s location won’t impact his or her experience, it may affect your overall experience. When applying for financing, meeting deadlines is extremely important. When you have questions or you need assistance (which you probably will at some point), you’ll want to know that you will be able to get in touch with your mortgage lender. For these reasons, you might want to take a mortgage company’s location into consideration. It’s much more likely that you’ll have a better outcome when your lender is situated in your time zone or even better, in the same zip code.
Consider Loan Options
Lastly, when you’re looking for a mortgage lender who will best suit your needs, it’s important to find someone who offers and has experience in the specific type of home loan you are interested in. There are several different types of mortgages available; conventional, FHA, SONYMA, USDA, VA, and FHA 203k Rehabilitation are just some of the different options. For example, if you’re a veteran, you may be interested in finding out if you qualify for a VA home loan, so you’ll want to choose a mortgage company that has experience with this specialized type of financing.
Before you choose a Kings County mortgage lender, it’s a good idea to schedule consultations with a handful of different companies. Pick at least three lenders that appear to offer the qualifications that will meet your needs and schedule an appointment to meet with a broker from each mortgage company. Find out what type of documentation you should bring with you during your appointment with each broker so they can run numbers and offer you an overview of the rates that you may qualify for. Additionally, you should ask some key questions that are pertinent to securing a loan. After you’ve finished the consultation process, compare the rates each mortgage company offered, as well as the overall impression each lender made.

Some information about Sheepshead Bay, NY
Sheepshead Bay is a neighborhood in southern Brooklyn, New York City. It is bounded by Ocean Parkway to the west; Avenue T and Kings Highway to the north; Nostrand Avenue and Gerritsen Avenue to the east; and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Sheepshead Bay is abutted by the neighborhoods of Brighton Beach and Homecrest to the west; Midwood to the north; and Gerritsen Beach to the east.
The name ‘Sheepshead Bay’ applies to the neighborhood north of the bay as well as the bay itself. Sheepshead Bay was named for the sheepshead, an edible fish found in the bay’s waters. Originally an extension of the town of Gravesend to the west, Sheepshead Bay was a secluded fishing and farming community early in its history.
Starting in the 1840s, residents of Brooklyn and Manhattan were drawn to the community as a summer destination. Hunters and fishermen started coming to Sheepshead Bay and various restaurants and hotels were erected. Sheepshead Bay’s allure as a fishing destination was further helped by the opening of Ocean Avenue in 1876 and the extension of the Long Island Rail Road’s Manhattan Beach Branch in 1877–1878, which brought visitors both to the community of Sheepshead Bay and to the Manhattan Beach resort across the bay. The first of the community’s farms was split up into several lots for residential development in 1877. Three years later the Sheepshead Bay Race Track opened in the neighborhood, bringing even more visitors during the spring and fall. Near the racecourse, racing investor William Collins Whitney constructed a raining track. A ‘Millionaire’s Row’ was built on Emmons Avenue east of East 27th Street, while socialites tended to go to restaurants such as Tappan’s.
The track would continue to operate as a horse-racing course until 1910 when horse betting was criminalized in New York state. Afterward it operated as an auto racing track from 1915 to 1919. The decline of the Sheepshead Bay Race Track, along with the construction of amusement parks at nearby Coney Island and the proximity of Coney Island’s attractions to the newly built subway, led to the decline of Sheepshead Bay as a tourist destination. Passenger rail service on the Manhattan Beach Branch ceased in 1924, and the line was formally abandoned in 1937. The former race track site was subdivided for the construction of housing, and Millionaire’s Row was soon lined with bungalows. The closure of the race track resulted in a plethora of newly vacant plots in the community of Sheepshead Bay, and by extension, an influx of residents.
